Transcription

(Redirected from Transliteration)

Transcription is writing the sounds of one language in the script of another language.

For example, Russian names are usually written in the Cyrillic alphabet, so to be readable by English speakers they must be transcribed into the Latin alphabet.

Transcription differs from transliteration in that a transliteration maps the symbols of one script to symbols in another script in a way that makes it possible to reverse the process.
