Meaning & History
Meaning disputed. "Armenia", the English version of the country's name, is derived from Ancient Greek Ἀρμενία (Armenía) which is from Old Persian Armina. The Armenian form, Hayastan, comes from Old Armenian Հայկ (hayk'), possibly derived from հայ (hay) which means "Armenian". հայ could be from Urartian hatiyos, hatyos, Ḫāti meaning "land of the Hittites". Armenia is a Caucasian country that was formerly part of the Soviet Union.
