Coined by author Lucy Maude Montgomery as a place name in her Anne of Green Gables series. She intended for Avonlea to echo the Avalon of Arthurian legends, an idyllic place of beauty. Literally means "grassy meadow" from an unknown element and the Old English leah "clearing, meadow". Has been used consistently as a given name in America since 1990, in which more than five American girls received the name.
