Meaning & History

From Portuguese barbados meaning "bearded ones", ultimately from barba meaning "beard". It is unclear what exactly the name refers to; it may have come from the hanging vines of fig trees on the island, from the beards worn by the native Carib (Kalinago) people, or from the 'beard' formed by sea foam surrounding the island. This is the name of an island country in the Caribbean.
