Meaning & History

From an alternative name for New York used in the Doctrine and Covenants. A possible origin could be that in the Bible, Cain, the son of Adam, had a son named Enoch. A derivative of that is Henoch, and a further derivative is Hanoch. It is the LDS belief that Adam and his people lived in America. So, in that sense, it could possibly be the site of the ancient City of Enoch (not to be confused with the righteous Enoch).
