Meaning & History

From Vietnamese Chăm Pa ultimately derived from Sanskrit चम्पक (champaka) referring to a type of flowering tree (genus Magnolia). This is the name of a collection of ancient kingdoms that existed between the 2nd and 17th centuries in what is now central and southern Vietnam.
