Meaning & History
The name of a region in The Netherlands which started as a county in medieval times, later (during the Renaissance) became a province in the Dutch Republic and which is nowadays divided into the two provinces Noord-Holland ("North Holland") and Zuid-Holland ("South Holland"). The name is said to be derived from Holtland or Holdland, both of which mean "wood land".
