Derived from Angusht, which is the name of an ancient village. The Ingush people call themselves the Гӏалгӏай (Ghalghai), a combination of the Ingush words ghala meaning "fortress, town" and ghai meaning "inhabitants, citizens". Ingushetia is a republic of Russia, located in the Caucasus and bordered by Chechnya. It was formerly a part of the Chechen-Ingush ASSR during the Soviet period.
