Meaning & History
Named after the Kasthamandap Temple in Kathmandu, which is derived from Sanskrit काष्ठ (Kāṣṭha) meaning "wood" and मण्डप (Maṇḍap) meaning "covered shelter"; literally means "wood-covered shelter". The city is also known as "Kāṣṭhamaṇḍap" in a Buddhist vow that is still recited today. Kathmandu is the capital city of the Southern Asian nation of Nepal.
