Meaning & History

Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire, England. It derives it's name from a Brythonic term Ladenses, meaning 'people of the fast-flowing river' (Welsh llawd). The word likely originally denoted a forest which covered the area of modern day Leeds.

The earliest known record of Leeds was in 731 A.D in which it's name was recorded as Loidis.

In the Domesday Book of 1086, Leeds was recorded as Ledes and was considered a 'large' settlement.

Inhabitants of Leeds are known as Loiners or Leodensians, the former from the 731 A.D name, the latter from the Brythonic word.
