Meaning & History

From Arabic قادس (Qadis), ultimately derived (via Latin) from Phoenician 𐤂𐤃𐤓 (gdr) meaning "wall, compound". This is the name of a province and city in southwestern Spain, historically known as Gades in Latin and Γάδειρα (Gadeira) in Greek.
