Meaning & History

This is the name of a city in Nara prefecture which used to be (briefly) the capital of Japan under the reign of Emperor Ninken (probably reigned from 488–498).

The kanji used are 天 (ten, ama-, amatsu, ame) meaning "heavens, imperial, sky" and 理 (ri, kotowari) meaning "arrangement, justice, logic, reason, truth."

As a word, Tenri (天理) means "natural laws, rule of heaven."

Tenri is also used as a feminine given name.
