Meaning & History

A river in Northeast England. The precise origin of name is not known for sure. But, given that it is one of Britain's major rivers, several theories have emerged:

The most likely is that it is Brythonic and possibly from a word equivalent with Welsh tes, 'sunshine, haze'. If named using these words, it may have meant 'the hazy river' or 'the shining river'.

It is less likely that it comes from a pre-Indo-European word. The pre-Indo-European languages of Britain are shrouded in mystery and have no known relation to any modern languages.
