From Russian Абхазия (Abkhaziya), which is ultimately from Georgian აფხაზეთი (Apxazeti) derived from the Georgian exonym for the Abkhaz people, აფხაზი (Apxazi). The name of the ethnic group is from the Abkhaz endonym Аԥсуаа (Aṗsuaa), which is of uncertain meaning. This is the name of a disputed territory in the CAUCASUS; the region considers itself to be a sovereign state while most international sources recognise it as a part of GEORGIA (1).
