The settlement of Einsiedeln is first mentioned in 1073. The town is known as Äinsidle in the local Highest Alemannic dialect, and in neighboring dialects as Äisele, Näisele, Äisidle, Näisidle, Äisigle. In the Romansh language it is known as Nossadunaun.
