I would never use this name because of it's whorish connection through the bible. Religion is very pervasive and a child named this is likely to suffer until she was old enough to legally change her name. If you like the -bel ending names, a safer alternative would be Isabel, Annabel, Belle, Clarabelle etc, but if you like the J names perhaps Jenelle or Janelle?

another thing I noticedPeople mentioned Jez & Jezzie as possible nns. Those remind me way too much of jiz or jism (sp? never seen them written) an American slang term for semen.

Yeah, that occured to me too (WARNING: Adultish content)I just didn't mention it, for obvious reasons.Btw, as regards to spelling, I've generally seen it written "jiz", or occasionally "jis"; I've also seen "jizz". It can also sometimes refer to the liquid in female ejaculation (which is real, btw), in which case it's specified "female jiz".Miranda (who reads way too much bad NC-17 fanfiction)

I love the name, but the meaning and the Biblical person are terrible. I like the nn Jezzie (jeh-zee). What comes to my mind first is Queen Jezebel.http://www.keyway.ca/htm2002/jezebel.htm

I know a cat named Jezebel so that is the firs thing that comes to mind for me......

It's a pity this name has such a bad meaning ("not exalted") and history, because I do love its sound. And it's a nice alternative for other popular -bel names like Isabel and Annabel. But still, I wouldn't use it. The Biblical connotations are just too much, and the negative meaning clinches it for me.I do, however, think the name should go without a nn if you insist on using it. Jezebel's so unusual and pretty in full that nning the child Jezzie or Bel(lle) just brings down the name imo.Miranda

Sound-wise, I like it. But the connotations are far too much - all the Biblical misogynism there is seems to reflect onto the name Jezebel. I take it you do know it's now a vocabulary word (albeit an outdated one) for any woman who is evil and scheming? Certainly not concepts I'd want to burden my daughter with in these more enlightened times.

Agreed.I was just speaking about this name with a friend. It's associations are a bit too strong IMO. Same with Delilah, another pretty name that'd be tough to put on a girl thanks to the conotations.

I agree.I still here Jezebel quite often. Its a fine name, but I cannot shake the association. Its just too strong for me.Siri

I think its really nice, i dont think of the biblical crap that goes with it, most teenagers or kids wouldnt know so they wouldnt tease.I know a Jezebel and she is a pain in the ass but it hasnt tainted the name... yet...

Jezebel...well of course I think of Jezebel the harlot/evil woman in the bible, but still it's a pretty name.
I would say Jezzie would be a nickname.
I have a cousin named Chesney Isabella and everyone calls her Chezzie Bell. So that's what I think of. edited to add "evil woman"
