Do you like Katya or Katja as a nickname for Katherine? or should they stand alone? Also, how do you say these names. I have an idea myself, but I don't know if its entirely accurate or if other people will say it the same way that I do. Thanks a bunch! :)

I like them as names, but not nns. Katherine is so beautiful, nns just take away from that

I don't care for Katya or Katja. I think Katherine is a great name, with the nickname Kath. But, I think nicknames should be left up to the child - not planned by the parents.

Well, Katja sure stands alone as a name in Scandinavia. Many Finnish Katja's are even surprised to hear their name is a form of Katariina. Over here, Katja has lost all of its nickname status and it's never used as a nn for Katariina.

Ditto for Denmark.Except here it's concidered nn for the Russian Katharina. Or so says my baby name book.But it's only used as a stand alone name nowadays here.- Charlie (Who prn Katja as KAT-yah)

How is Katya pronunced? The same?I'm curious, because I've often thought of using Katya (pro. kat-tia) as a nick-name for Katarina. I like Kat-yah a bit better.Siri

If anything Katja since it is a real pet form of Katherine, German one I believe which makes it all the better.Standing alone I dont know. I guess it could, but sometimes its nice to have a more formal name. As I had a friend in high school whose grandmother wanted her to be named Suzie but her mom wanted something more formal incase she became a doctor or lawyer or something like that. So Susanne with the nn Suzie was decided upon. Not that she is becoming something professional as a doctor or lawyer. But I can see me using Kristina at the place I work at once done with my Masters, and not Kris or Kristi or other pet names/nn.
