OK, I'm trying to name a setting in a piece I'm working on. It's a shore town that exists almost solely because of a large hotel; it's very small and very isolated. Somewhere on the East Coast in NJ-FL.
What do you think of "Carelie"? How would you say that, first seeing it?
Other spellings I'm thinking of: Caralie, Caraly.

Some confusion...
I'm writing a story, in which I have the town. The name is for the town; as far as I've planned, nobody in it is called Carelie or anything similar.
(Kinda a weird topic, I know, but couldn't think of anywhere else to stash it.)

It has a nice sound to it, but I prefer the spelling Caraly.

If the place means something to you, then it could work very well. But with placenames, I do like a connection to be there, personally.

Original spelling Karelia (Karjala in Finnish; Karelija in Russian).
I've heard of Karelia being used as a girls' name -- probably for patriotic reasons. A vast part of Karelia was ceded to Russia after WWII, and the population was resettled elsewhere in Finland. The people speak Karelian (a dialect of Finnish; some say a language on its own right). The Karelians feels very strongly for their lost land and fight to keep their culture alive.
The origin of the name Karelia is unclear to me. Maybe it has something to do with someone named Karel? However, the Finnish name, Karjala, seems to refer to cattle-keeping (cattle = karja).
Carelie is a spelling I haven't seen before. Quite nice, actually.

Hmm, hadn't known that...
Just whomped up a name for a random town. :) Hmm... it's heavily Caucasian, been-there-since-forever. *Adds to idea sheet: possibly have it be founded by immigrants from Karelia/Karjala/Karelija...* Thanks!

My first thought was to say it "Cara Lee" with the accent on the "ca"...CA-ruh-lee...like, "merrily".
My second thought was "Oh, I hope that's not some wretched spelling of Carly...!!!"
If I'm pronouncing it correctly, I think I like the Caraly spelling better.

I like it! Do you pn it Carole -Lee? If so another spelling could be Carolee, Carolie.

Carelie's nmsaa, sorry. It looks and sounds made up, trendy, and tacky to me.
Having said that, I would say KAIR-e-lee for Carelie; but I would think many people would mistakenly say KAIR-lee or even KAIR-lye.
Caralie is much better imo, because it derives legitimacy from Coralie. In fact, Caralie's better than Coralie in one aspect: it doesn't resemble "orally" in sound. For Caralie, I would say KAIR-ah-lee.

I'd say Carelie "CAIR-uh-lee" if it was a person, and possibly "CAIR-uh-lye" if it was a place.
