Yariv sounds masculine to me. http://www.hebrewletters.com/item.cfm?itemid=2649
The name Yariv is used only for males in Israel.
You are right, YARIV can be a Jewish name, meaning "The Lord fights" or "has a lawsuit". It was probably given to express the following idea: A woman was mocked because she had no children, so she said: God will show that I am righteous (barrenness was looked upon as a punishment from God). So God "fought" for this woman in the lawsuit by granting her that child.
This sound complicated, but this is how a lot of Hebrew names work (Joakim, Daniel and others). There may be other interpretations, I don't know.
In the bible you will find a simlar name: JERIBAI with the same meaning.
