I have a friend named Amina, pronounced AMM-in-uh. She was named after her mom whose name is also Amina, but pronounced uh-MEE-nuh. They're completely different, but spelled the same, though in Arabic the spelling isn't the same. Interesting, huh? Which do you prefer and how would you assume Amina is pronounced? At first I thought AMM-in-uh was awkward, but now I like it best though the other way is nice too.

My good friend's Lao name is Amina. Her legal American name is Monica. She pronounces Amina like ah'-mee-NAH, so 'mee' is on a downbeat. 'Ah' is the second most emphasized part. 'Nah' has the strongest accent. It's really beautiful when she says it, but I really screw it up.
I prefer this to either of the pronounciation you have, as AMM-in-ah reminds me of "ominous" and ah-MEE-nah sounds like amino as in amino acids.

Hi! That pronunciation is really pretty, I think it's prettiest of all. It's funny because I have another close friend named Monica, and it's not like Monica and Amina are common names. Amina pronounces her name AMM-inn-uh, amm like ammunition or clam, not like ominous. Though "Aminous" would make a funny nickname for it!

I went to school with a girl called Amina (although, thinking about it, she may have spelled it Ameenah) who pronounced it ah-MEE-nuh. AM-in-uh sounds awkward to me too, but kind of cool.

I love the name Amina, very beautiful. It was actually my ex-boyfriend's niece's name, she pronounced it a-MEE-na, and her father was actually Arabic.

I don't like either pronunciation, but isn't uh-MEE-nuh the correct one? The name just looks and sounds too medical for me, maybe because it reminds me of "amino"?

Hi there! Both pronunciations are correct. In Arabic, the two pronunciations are spelled differently, but that language has more letters and when translated into English, the two pronunciations are spelled the same. Does that make sense? So, pretending English is Arabic, it would kind of be like in Arabic they're spelled Amnah (AMM--inn-uh) and Ameena (uh-MEE-nuh). But not in English. Does that make sense?

Oh yeah, I listed some of her nicknames below and I actually have called her Enema! Stamina is another.

Like Isla said, I think of "Amino acids" if I pronounce it with the long E sound, so I've taken to pronouncing it Ah-MIHN-ah/Ah-MEN-ah(that's the same pronunciation, typed out in too forms). I considered it for one of my characters not too long ago, but because of it's meaning.

I would assume uh-MEE-nah, and the way your friend pronounces it does seem awkward but it could grow on me. I kind of like Amina (pronounced like your friend's mother prn. it) but at first glance it makes me think of amino acids. :b

Heh, one of Amina's many, many nicknames is "Amino Acid" or "Amina Acid". Other nicknames from her name are Aminal (like Animal), Amigator (like Alligator), Aminal Cracker, Saminella (like salmonella- her friends have weird senses of humor!), etc. She loves her name though and likes all the funky nicknames.

I love the name! I would pronounce it UH-mee-nuh though... From those two I prefer uh-MEE-nuh.
