Yeah, I totally agree with you too. Laine / Lane sounds quite masculine to me, and spelling it Laine looks like one of those those "I'll kre8ivlee spell a male name to make it feminine!" spellings.
But I think Laine's very nice as a nn for Elaine, if the girl/woman chooses.
