I like Lain for a girl (not a big fan of Laine, since the E seems so superfluous), and I can definitely see Lee as a nickname for it. I suppose it's a bit like Kiki and Mimi; those can go with pretty much any K or M name, so why shouldn't Lee? Actually, I think it's kind of cute, and it definitely sounds more professional than Lainey or something similar.
Elaine isn't Elaine to me if it has a nickname. Then it's just something of a disappointment.
