[Opinions] Finnish names for a real baby
My friend is going to have a baby; she and her husband come from families of Finnish descent so they are looking into appropriate names. (We live in a heavily Scandinavian area where you can hardly throw a stone without landing it near an elderly Saari, Paavo, or Toivo.) For a girl they're considering the name Milla (ME la) Sisu or Saari Irina. For a boy they are looking at Nikolaus Laine (LIE neh) or Matias Sisu. You can find some pronunciations here: http://www.sci.fi/~kajun/finns/meanings.htmWhat do you think? They're looking for humane options, nothing with a pronunciation too far from its spelling, while holding up with their heritage at the same time.

I like Saari Irina and Milla. I have a friend named Aila. She's not Finnish, but her name is (she says). There's nothing about it on this site, but it may still be...I love her name. I also love Matleena, Tanja, Sofia, Suoma, Siiri, and Heidi, and those are listed as Finnish by this site. For boys, I like Nikolaus Laine (afraid it would be pronounced "Lane", though), and Matias Sisu. I love the name Paavo, too, even though that wasn't one of the choices. And Elias and Henri are great Finnish names I found on this site, too.You should show your friend the btn list of Finnish names:

I like Suoma, too. Also Siiri. Good point on Laine's potential pronunciation; I think that would definitely be what happens.

Milla is gorgeous. Are you in the US? or where? I'm in the US and Milla is the one that would be easiest. Although folks here would say "Mill-a" not "Mee-la" naturally. Saari is nice also, and would be pronounced correctly; though sounds a bit more "foreign" (in case they're trying to avoid any 'immigrant' stigma). Nikolaus and Matias would probably get nicknamed by English speakers -- Nik or Mat: I like that. And the names are easily recognizable as forms of Matthew and Nicholas.- chazda

We're in the United States. We live in a part of our state with a ton of Finnish descendents and some older immigrants. Young Saaris and Paavos aren't unheard of around here, which is why they're not too shy of using an ethnic name. You're very right in that they want one that's pronunciation-friendly as well as Finnish.

I like all of the names. I guess I didn't really know that Sisu was used as a name, though I am quite familiar with it as a word.

I LOOVVVEEEE Milla but Sisu and Saari just sounds a bit odd to me. Irina is alright but sounds a bit dated imo. Maybe Linnea, Kaia, or Liv off the top of my head. Nikolaus is fine but if they want it to be easier to prn. or be more excepted they should use a different spelling. Matias is fine aswell but I would prefer the Mattias spelling.
