[Opinions] Marishka
What do you think about this name? Marishka. I have heard it a couple of times, but always said with a strong accent, and I like it. What about you??~~The brave may not live forever, but the cautious don't live at all~~

I love this name, in the Netherlands, Mariska, a different version is used, which I also like, but we don't say the sh-sound. So to get people to pronounce it with a sh, you'd have to spell it with a sh, or everyone would say it wrong. I like the sh-sound in Marishka a lot. I also like other -shka names, like Anoushka or Maroushka (not sure of the exact spelling, but it's the name of one of my mom's best friends from high school)~Lully Lulla~

As you probably guessed, I find the Marishka spelling really dumb. I, of course, understand that it makes pronounciation easier, but then, name your daughter Sarah, and everyone will know how to say it. If you choose a name from a different culture, at least spell it corectly.Mariska (spelled correctly) is not that dear to me, either. In Hungary, it would be considered either childinsh (the -ka, -ke endings are diminutive suffixes) or hillbilly. Mária was the top girls name for decades, and thus is really common.
Not to mention that Riska is *the* Hungarian cow name :-)

Re:Those are interesting facts to know
You would know Narinoc. Do you know of any names for boys or girls that are considered ridiculous in Romania? I know that Ion,Mihai ,Nicolae, and Maria are some of the top names there.

Romanian namesSadly enough, I don't know a thing about Romanian names apart from the names of some politicians from the news - and I don't think that's significant... :-(

The only time I've heard it is on Mariska Hargitay (also pronounced Marishka). I'd only suggest using it if it suited your ethic background, though. It would seem odd on an Asian person or someone with a thick Irish or Southern accent, for instance, imo. :bETA: I do like it. It's a beautiful name.

No, it's notIt's a phonetic English respelling of Mariska, which is a pet form of Mária, the Hungarian form of Maria. In Hungarian, S is pronounced as "sh", hence Marishka in English.I still prefer Mariska though, since it looks less "sloppy" to me. Jayne Mansfield had a daughter named Mariska by her Hungarian-born husband Miklós "Mickey" Hargitay; Mariska Hargitay is now famous in her own right as Detective Olivia Benson on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
