I went to an amusement park today, and I heard a mother calling her daughter Emmalyn (I'm just guessing on the spelling). I think it's a pretty name. She called her Emma for short. What do you think of Emmalyn, Emmilyn, Emilyn, etc.?

I like the Emmalyn spelling, actually. It's sweet. I'd prefer Emmelyn though, like Emmeline but with the -line swopped for -lyn.

Just sounds like someone trying out an alternative for an extremely popular and overused name, so we have yet another Emily, Emma, Emersyn, Emmy running around. Unoriginal.
Or it could be a different pronounciation of Emmeline/Emmaline/Emeline, in which case it's "wrong" I suppose. I'm just over the Em- names at this point.

I like Emma but I don't like Emmalyn or even Emma Lynn.
To me Emma needs a mn like
Victoria
Charlotte
Corinne
Lorraine
or Katherine to have as a mn.

To me, it looks like a pathetic attempt to "unique-ify" the popular (but very old and very classic) Emma by adding the uber-trendy, very modern, quite meaningless suffix -lyn.
Emma's strong, beautiful, and mature. But Emmalyn's insipid, childish, and insubstantial imo.

Actually, Llyn in Welsh is lake, from which we get our "Lyn", so Emmalyn could mean "universal lake". :-P
I personally think the -lyn makes an improvement.

Ninety-nine percent of people who tack -lyn onto a pre-existing name have no idea Lyn can come from Welsh llyn. I bet they usually think it just sounds pretty, nothing more. Or, if they do think it means something, they think it means "beautiful" or something ridiculously false like that.

I look at that name thinking that the parents just wanted an Emma- like name, but didn't want to choose the trendy name Emma, so they thought by adding on the -lyn, they made a completely unique name. In reality, they just made the name even more trendy. They should have just gone with Emma, but I'd much prefer Emily.
