[Opinions] Soul
Just a quick question - how do you like the name Winter for a girl? Do you think it's tacky because it's a word name? If you like it, do you like it better as the first or as the middle name, and what kind of names would go best with it (modern? classic? trendy? examples?)? I've personally developed a weird fixation for it even though I usually prefer classical names. I wouldn't name my child that, but it would be awesome on a character in a book. I prefer it as a middle name, though. What's your opinion?

Oh yay!Winter!! My favourite season name.
I like it spelled Winter because Wynter is much much too trendy.Harmony was going to be named Harmony Winter, but she was born early and not in the winter, so we named her Harmony Lyla instead.
I still love Winter though.
It's unique, but not UyNeek or unheard of. Set it with a classy name if that is usually your taste and I found it works better as a middle name too.-Seda*

WinterMy friend was going to name her daughter Harmony Winter.
I'll tell her about this discussion so she can give her "I love it" response.I like it. I don't love it, but I like it. It would need a good name to balance it out and not a filler name like Winter Anne or Winter Marie, but as long as it was paired with a good name, it would be a nice change from Emma, Katelyn, and Madison.Kelly

I think it's getting popular, and it borders on trendy. (Summer and Autumn aren't trendy to me, but Winter hasn't been around long enough for it to entrench itself as a non-trendy name imo.) I also think it sounds masculine.Though Winter's my favourite season (I like the darkness it brings), I just don't think it sounds pretty or feminine enough for a RL female, regardless of her age.

I really like Winter on a girl, and I think it would go well with a classic name. Don't ask me what one, though, I'm not so good with the classics. Winter would have to be the mn for me as well, but she'd go by Winter occassionally. A character in a book I wrote was originally called Winter but it didn't suit her so it's now her last name instead. -------------------------------------------------

I know a girl named Lauren Winter; her middle name is a family surname, though. I think that Winter is very nice, either for a girl or for a boy. The best middle names would be those you liked. Of course I'd prefer Winter Melora to Winter McKaylee, but one certainly doesn't sound inherently better with Winter based off of style.Soul is a nice name, too, but it works better as a middle name. ;) And I kind of like Sol better.Array

I like it too, but I'd like it as a first name. I'm not usually a fan of word names, only with a few exeptions. But I like Winter. I'd never use it probably, but somehow I like it. It's a very good character name.

I think I agree with you mostly. I like it. I think it'd be cool for a character, but I wouldn't name my child that.

I love Winter for a girl. I also quite like it spelled Wynter. I think it needs a classic middle name though. Winter Sophia or Wynter Madeline would be gorgeous :-)_____________________________________________________________________"There are few more distressing sights than that

Well, I don't like it myself. But I know of a person whow as going to use Marina Winter (possibly Aurora Winter) if their son was a girl.

Well it's kind of like calling a little girl Summer. So I think it's alright if you call her Winter. Pretty name.

Hiya,I've only ever seen Winter on boys (one was spelt Wynter.) I have heard of a girl named
Winter, but didn't see her or anything, so I couldn't really tell if it suited her, so it still sits as a boys'
name to me. I've never seen adult with the name Winter, though. I think if people can name their kids
Summer, Autumn, Treasure (I was trying to stick with the season-type names, but I personally find
Treasure to be atrocious, no offence meant to anyone who likes this name), why can't you name
one Winter? I don't think it would be the worst name. I quite like Winter, but on a boy. On the
opposite hand of Lissa Hannah, I would find it tackier if Winter was born during Spring / Summer /
Fall months. I knew a girl named April who was born in September, and for some reason it drove me
crazy! Anyways! I've rambled on enough. The short and short of it is ... I like Winter (or Wynter) but
generally as a boys name. LoL!xx Cait xx

That's funny considering it's coming from a girl whose name is Caitlin and she likes it!
I'd rather be Treasure anyday.Next time you give an example that harsh, don't use a member's child's name. It's offensive whether you meant it to be or not.

Sorry Seda*, but ...This is a naming opinion board. We can't round up all the names of people's children, and say "we don't comment on these". With all the semi-regulars and occasional posters, that'd probably make for 100+ names we couldn't criticise. How ridiculous would that be.Every time you give bad feedback on a name yourself, there could be someone reading it who gave the name to their child. You wouldn't necessarily know - they might not be a regular, or they might never have mentioned their children. Every name you've complained about since joining the board, has belonged to someone, somewhere. And that someone is going to a daughter/son to somebody. That's hardly a reason not to comment on the name!_____________________________________________________________________"There are few more distressing sights than that

No, I never said she couldn't comment or even say that she didn't like it, but she didn't have to slam that exact one nor did she have to say more than it wasn't her style. It wasn't in the database until a few days ago and no one other than myself had ever mentioned it before(okay, maybe Diana did once, but still). I only ask that someone isn't so harsh. Granted, I have said that people's children's names are nms or that I'd never use them, but I've never said "Oh that's the worst, most trashiest name I've ever heard! How could you name your kid that? That's horrendous!" Reguardless of my opinion, I do tend to try to have a little decency about it.
Also, keep in mind this is my daughter and it is my place to feel a little defensive about it. I'd rather her attack my name anyday.-Seda*

I'm sure she could've used many examples of vocab names she dislikes, other than Treasure. But those names could've had bearers with mothers, too. I don't think Cait was that harsh. She used one harsh word about Treasure -- "atrocious". That is an extreme word but perhaps she has extreme feelings about the name? We all have a few names we really, really dislike. Every day I see examples of people being ruder than Cait was just there. Many regulars tap into the class and education stereotypes, speaking very snobbishly to whoever likes a "bad" name, and no one bats an eyelid. If we all got "defensive" every time we saw the name of someone we knew, we'd all be arguing constantly. You'd be as well just separating the name from the person a bit, as long as the comments aren't very rude or personal (which Cait's wasn't imo, just blunt)._____________________________________________________________________"There are few more distressing sights than that

Sure, but not on this board. If we all got "defensive" every time we saw the name of someone we knew, we'd all be arguing constantly.
Explain to me then why everyone got so upset when Mo5's children's names were posted on another board by Kelly R. Was that not because Kelly was being harsh about Mo5's children's names? Sure we all have different taste, but there is no need to be rude about it.-Seda*Image hosted by Photobucket.comImage hosted by Photobucket.com

I dislike all season names (I find them all tacky). Winter does not feel like a name to me in the least. I cannot see a human being with the name (child or adult), and the thought of an adult woman named Winter just makes me cringe. As a side note, I'd find it even tackier if she was named Winter and was born in a winter month. Sorry.
