[Opinions] Tamar
WDYT of the name Tamar for a girl? I've been using the TAY-mar pronunciation, since (a) I find it easier and prettier than TAH-mar and (b) it's the pronunciation given in some book I have. But does anyone know if that's the usual pronunciation? (I suppose it's hard to say what's "usual", since the name is so rare.)Anyway, how are these for combos ...
Tamar Juliet
Tamar Sophia
Tamar Catrina
Tamar Loretta

The Hebrew pronounciation is tuh-MAR, and I LOVE that one, but don't like the others at all.

I knew a Tamar in college, she pronounced it ta-MAHR.

I've never heard the TAY-mar pronunciation, but I can't say whether or not that's a "real" pronunciation or not. But I do prefer tah-MARR, which I'm more familiar with and I believe it's the way it's pronounced in the Bible. The other way makes me think of the word 'tamer'. :b As for mn's, I like all four combos, but I like the first two the best.

My first instinct would be to prn. it tah-MAR, bc. TAY-mar sounds forced to me.I don't exactly like the sound of this name, but Its a very nice name, based on it's meaning.I like:Tamar Paloma
Tamar Juliet
Tamar Ysabel (for some reason, the Y looks very pleasing to me in this combo)

I don't care for the name, as I don't find it in any way feminine. I'd pronounce it as Tah-mar. From your middle names, I like Juliette (this spelling only), Sophia, and Loretta. If I had to choose a combo, I'd choose Tamar Sophia.

I know a Tamar & she pronounces it TAY-mar. I like Tamar Catrina the best out of your combos. I personally don't like the name Tamar, due to the Bible stories about 2 different Tamars involved in incest (One Tamar posed as a prostitute, seduced her father-in-law & bore him twin boys. Another Tamar, daughter of King David, was raped by her half-brother Amnon.), but I guarantee you that most people wouldn't associate the name with those Bible stories, as they are somewhat obscure. Besides, it really has a nice meaning and a lovely sound to it. :o) Sound-wise, I do prefer it to Tamara.Proud adopter of eight PPs! See my profile for their names.

*Shudder* I'm afraid I only know the most mainstream Bible stories, and hadn't heard either of those. The half-brother rape one is particularly unpleasant ... Hmmm ... Might make me reconsider lol. Thanks for the info!_____________________________________________________________________"There are few more distressing sights than that

I've known Tamars, and only hear it TA-marI love it, only pronunced TA-mar, though. I guess because that's what I'm used to. TAY-mar sounds too masculine to me. Tamar Juliet is quite pretty, as is Tamar Catrina.Siri
