In agreement with most of the other posters here--"Heaven" is not a place or an idea that is part of only one religion or denomination; even non-religious people believe there is a Heaven. So spelling it backwards has nowhere near the same significance as an upside down cross, nor is it sacrilegious by any means. Nevaeh as a name is merely ridiculous and stupid, imo, but not a mortal sin.

I don't understand, why this name causes so much trouble. I can't really judge this sacrilege (sp?) thing because I don't believe in heaven or hell. I don't think it's trashy either, because only a person can be trashy. And to be honest, there are a lot worse names out there.

I don't think it's sacreligious, but I do think it's silly...if you think of backwards as opposite, than the opposite of "heaven" would be "hell"....so....

I don't necessarily think so but I don't necessarily think about the name Nevaeh anyway. I must admit it gives me a bit of a chuckle to think at how aghast the parents of Nevaehs might be if they learned that some people think their children are named Hell.

I don't think it's sacreligious if it's not intended that way. Even if it is sacreligious ... I just don't care. Since I believe that all religions are man-made and ultimately meaningless, "sacreligious" doesn't carry any weight in my eyes. The parents who use Nevaeh are, I suspect, a combination of religious and uneducated. Put it this way: parents with theology degrees don't name their offspring Nevaeh. They'd choose something from the Bible, perhaps. But Spelling something good backwards = bad seems like a pagan superstition to me anyway - and I doubt many Christians would assign themselves to pagan superstition. (It seems to be almost exclusively American Christians using Nevaeh.)

To answer your question, no, you're not the only one to think that. I've heard it many times before. But my own reasons for disliking Nevaeh revolve around its tackiness and its stupidity, not its religious or irreligious significance.

As for the name, I like the sound of it, I think its quite pretty, but I'd never personally use it as it seems rather trendy to me. However, it doesn't bother me that it was reently created, or how it was created, because all names have to start somewhere. Sure it doesn't have years of history behind it, which is why it feels trendy and insubstantial to me. What I don't like is changes t the speling, such as Neveah, which makes it Haeven backwards and seems to defeat the whole purpose of the names existance. I also don't like it when parents who have used/ will use Nevaeh are adament that it means White Butterfly or whatever- it is Heaven spelled backwards. Thats it.

No, you are certainly not the only person who has that feeling. But it is an emotional reaction, not a logical one. There is no logical reason why a reverse spelling should create a word with a reverse meaning, any more than a reverse spelling should create a word with the same meaning.

If reverse spellings were "sacrilegious", then we should find a different word besides "dog" to call canine animals. :)

I don't know about sacriligious, but it's definitely counter-productive to me. If the purpose is to use Heaven, why reverse its meaning by spelling it backwards? Isn't the opposite of Heaven Hell?

I'm not a Christian nor spiritual nor a follower of any organized religion, but I definitely agree with you. I also feel as if it is an insult to Christianity and Islam (even if Christianity is my most hated religion) when one names his/her son Jesus/Allah.

to go as far as saying it's sacreligious is a bit much ,but I don't like Nevaeh at all, I just don't see why people cannot use Heaven in the first place, I don't get why they have to spell it backwards.

It's never struck me that way before. I don't think its sacrilegious, but more honoring if anything. And ditto with most of what Iac said.

I think calling it sacreligious is going a bit too far, since that's obviously not the intention of those who use it.

You might be the only one - I know I don't agree. The word "heaven" itself isn't a symbol of any particular religion, like the cross. Besides, when I think of the kind of person who might like the name Nevaeh, I usually imagine a someone who's religious - the opposite of the kind of person who would want to commit sacrilege.

A lot of people think that, and I'm pretty sure it's been brought up before, but honestly, I don't get the big deal. I think it's trendy and not particularly pretty, but I really don't care about the heaven thing. I mean, it's a name. Names are not inherently good nor bad. Also, if you think it's sacrilegious, just don't use it yourself, but I have a hard time when people pass judgment on it as a whole just because it disagrees with their personal belief system. I'm not attacking you, so please don't misunderstand me. I just mean in general, I am uncomfortable labeling names like this.

If you read the comments about Nevaeh you will see that you are not. It's spelt Nevaeh, btw.
