[Opinions] Metallica
I found the story on Yahoo news,
A Swedish couple are fighting to convince officials that the name Metallica is suitable for their daughter
Little Metallica has already been baptised but the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with the rock group and the word metal.
An official handling the case also called it ugly.
Michael and Karolina Tomora the babies parents, are backed by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13,that there was no reason to block the name, it was noted that there was already a woman living in Sweden with Metallica as her middle name.
The tax agency has now taken the argument to a higher court frustrating the families plans to travel abroad as they cant get a passport for the baby who is now 6 months old.
What does everyone think about this, personally I think Metallica is awful but I do feel for the Parents.

I think that the parents should be able to name the child whatever they want as long as it's not vulgar. And, while I think the name is horrible!!, I agree that officials should not give them a hard time about it.

I personally wouldn't consider naming a child Metallica even though I'm a huge fan of the band. However, names like Nevaeh, Brittneigh and whatever are actually worse than Metallica, in my opinion. I think they should be allowed to name their child whatever they like.

I agree, the name is silly IMO but I do feel for the parents and they should have the right to name their child this. I definately would want to be able to name my own child.

I hate the name, but is it any worse than Electra? Perhaps Carmen is easier on the eye then the members of Metallica. In any case, I cannot see that it could be a good idea for a government to get involved in baby naming.

Personally I see nothing wrong with Metallica, I dislike the band [except for one songg] so I don't see it's appeal. I think they should be allowed to name her what they want as long as it's not derogetory or offensive.

I think it's ridiculous. However, I do feel sorry for the parents if they had already gotten permission.

I dissagree. I think that Metallica is a beautiful and unique name imo.

I think they should have the right to name their daughter what they want to, no matter how silly I personally might think the name is.

I agree as long as its not insulting or something that might incite trouble for the child as he or she grows up, parents should have the right to name their children whatever they wish.

The problem with that is WHO gets to decide if a name "might incite trouble"?? I really don't want to give government bureaucrats the power to make that decision. I don't trust them to be able to predict that accurately enough to want to limit parents' rights in that way.

I have to agree. As horrible as some of the BA's are--IMO--taking away the right to decide your own child's name would be even more horrible. IMHO

Your right of corse and in the situation I mentioned dispite having a ruling in their favour the poor family are still being dragged through the courts by Bureaucrats and the baby is six months old already, how old will the poor mite be when the final decision is given I wonder.
