It comes from the Russian root word for life: zhizn' ("ZHEE-zin"). Dr. Zhivago is a medical doctor concerned with biological life, but also a poet concerned with the metephysical side of life. Pasternak uses the root word for life in the name as symbolism. His first name, George / Yuri, means farmer.

The bookThe book is amazing. It is my hands-down favorite of all time. I first read it when I was too young to really grasp all of it and read it again last summer and fell in love with it all over again. I hope you enjoy it!

Zhivago means "the living".From Britannica online: In the Russian version of the Gospel According to St. Luke, the angels ask the women who come to Christ's tomb: “Chto vy ischyote zhivago mezhdu myortvykh?”—“Why do you seek the living among the dead?”

I was thinking about that name the other day. I am a huge fan of the book and film, Doctor Zhivago, but I never bothered to look up what the name means. It is very fitting as a surname for the title character.
