good name or not? Yes.
popular on not? Yes, extremely, inescapably, perpetually.
who comes to your mind as a first John?
John Lennon. Then John the Baptist. Then John my priest, then John the red-headed druggie, then John the druggie who was so bad his parents sent him to live with his carpenter uncle, then John David the guy my friend loves, then John with the ponytail, then John who used to sit by me in band, then John my mom's friend, then John Wesley, then John Henry my quasi-friend's brother, then John Reich (my character), then John Adams, then John Smith, then Big John from that old country song. I could go on and on.
is there any other pet from John besides Johnny?
Jack. John-john. Jojo.
what is a 'personality' of that name in your opinion?
John has no personality. John is every boy in the world.
what middle name goes best with John?
Benedict. (But I think Benedict goes best with everything.) Most things go well with John, but I would pick something interesting and distinctive to counteract John.

1. I think John is a great name. It's one of my top favorites for a boy.
2. I don't think it's overly popular. It's a very classic, handsome, strong, masculine name imo.
3. John Walton (and John-Boy) from the 1970s tv show "The Waltons". John F. Kennedy (and JFK Jr.) also come to mind.
4. Jack is a pet form of John. I don't like Johnny at all. I'd just use John, perhaps with the occassional Jack.
5. I think of John as a strong, handsome man...hard-working and dedicated to his family.
6. My personal favorite John combos are John Spencer, John Grant, and John Samuel.
7. Of all the names you've listed, in order, I prefer: John, Jacob (only with this spelling), James, William, and Jack. John is my favorite, hands down.
8. John could be a brother to Alan, though I'm not fond of the name Alan.
9. I'd definitely consider John as a name for my son. Love it! :-)

good name or not? Yes.
popular on not? I'd say common, not popular necessarily.
who comes to your mind as a first John? I don't have a first association.
is there any other pet from John besides Johnny? Jack, obviously. Jay or Jake also.
what is a 'personality' of that name in your opinion? Steadfast, trustworthy, protective.
what midle name goes best with John? Virtually anything. I'll put a few suggestions at the end.
Which is better John or James? Jack? Jackob? maybe William? I personally like James and John both very much. I only like Jack as a nn. William is a good name, I especially like nn Will. Jacob is ok, but not a personal fave.
Could it be a name of a brother to Alan? Of course.
would you chouse it as a name of your son? Possibly as a mn, but unlikely, simply because I'll never get to use all of the names that I want to use. :)
A very few combo ideas:
John Augustine
John Cornelius
John David
John Sebastian
John Nathanael
John Malachi
John Christopher
John Daniel
John Stellan
John Thaddeus

good name or not? Good name.
popular on not? Yes, it's popular.
who comes to your mind as a first John? I don't understand this question. What do you mean "a first John?"
is there any other pet from John besides Johnny? Jack
what is a 'personality' of that name in your opinion? Traditional, not very daring.
what midle name goes best with John? Oh, there're loads of them. I like John Sebastian, John Albert, John Edmund...
Which is better John or James? Jack? Jackob? maybe William? I like John, Jack, and William best, but I also like James. Jackob? Do you mean Jakob/Jacob? It's ok, but I prefer John and Jack.
Could it be a name of a brother to Alan? Yes, sure.
would you chouse it as a name of your son? No.
popular on not? Yes, it's popular.

John
Yes it is a good name.
I think it is classic, but not overly popular.
My cousin is the first John I think of than I think of John Paul 2
You could use Jack as a nn for John. I am not really fond of Johnny
John could be so many things because it is such an across the board name. I picture a rather charming man, probably funny who is successful.
If I usedJohn I would use it as a double first name: John Paul. John can work with many names. My cousins name is John Francis. I don't think any mn goes BEST with the name.
John is better than James, it is less used at least around here. William is boring, but I do like the nn Liam or no nn at all. Jackob is somewhat ridiculous looking. Jacob is nice though.
Yes it could easily be a brother to Alan (which I love by the way).
Again, if I used it it would be a double first name as John Paul.

good name or not? Nice, if a bit plain. But still, very aimable.
popular on not? Yes, I think it is, though it's not being used as often. (I believe.)
who comes to your mind as a first John? John Adams!
is there any other pet from John besides Johnny? There are quite a few, but Jack or Ian are the only ones I would use on a boy named John. I think an earlier poster listed other pet forms that developed from John.
what is a 'personality' of that name in your opinion? Hm...I tend to think of steadiness when I think of John, reliability, though I think it's one of those names that really molds itself to the personality of its bearer. (Wow, that made no sense.)
what midle name goes best with John? I think here you could really get away with anything. Because John is such a common/well-known name, it will go well with a lot of things. I'd go for something English and probably something 'classic' in the same way John is, like William, Christopher, Thomas, Anthony, &c.
Which is better John or James? Jack? Jackob? maybe William? I'm a fan of Jacob. James is also nice.
Could it be a name of a brother to Alan? Sure.
would you chouse it as a name of your son? Probably not, just because going through life named Sarah has left me bitter and I will probably name my hypothetical son something a little less common. On the other hand, I have considered this name, so...who knows?

good name or not? - a bit broing, so that's why I'd say no
popular on not? - yes
who comes to your mind as a first John? - dunno
is there any other pet from John besides Johnny? - Jack or J.(MN initial).
what is a 'personality' of that name in your opinion? - I know too many people to say, I guess something cowboyish...
what midle name goes best with John? - John Ramses
Which is better John or James? Jack? Jackob? maybe William? - I think both Jack and James are better
Could it be a name of a brother to Alan? - sure, why not?
would you chouse it as a name of your son? - nope, first of all because it's too common for my taste and secondly becausde it's the name of an uncle, and thirdly because Dutch people tend to butcher the pron. to SHON / ZYON

I think John is a great name, not plain and dull at all.
It is popular but not like a trendy name that gets overexposed and dated. It is a classic and has a long history and so many versions of the name.
I like James a lot too, I think both work really well with Alan.
I would like to name a son John, but my husband says no.
Hard to say who comes to mind, there are so many Johns. John Lennon is one I always think of and maybe his image has rubbed off on the name for me.

*Good name or not?
Yes, I love it. It's in my top 10 (John Bertram)
*Popular or not?
Yes (there's no getting away from it) but popularity never bothers me and John is a name that's been contantly popular, has a varied history and isn't part of a fad of soundalike names (e.g. Aidan / Jaden / Caden / Hayden / Braden etc)
*Who comes to your mind as a first John?
No-one really. People I know, a few kings and other people in history but it's not tied to just one person.
*Is there any other pet from John besides Johnny?
Jack, Jock, Jackie, Jockie, (ok, the last few not exactly usable)
*What is a 'personality' of that name in your opinion?
It's a good solid name so realiability, steadiness.
*What midle name goes best with John?
John Bertram :)
There's loads though that I like, this is a list from a post I made several months back (when I decided John needed a more unusual middle name):
John Frederick
John Sylvester
John Felix
John Lachlan
John Meredith (I prefer Meredith on a boy)
John Peregrine
John Sidney
John Tierney
John Augustus
Yes, I love it. It's in my top 10 (John Bertram)

I've always loved the name John. It may have been used too much in the past, but I rarely hear it anymore in the under twenty set. To me, both John and Mary are a breath of fresh air.
John is strong, but kind; a still waters run deep kind of a guy. I suppose that's why when I was younger I wanted to have either a husband or a ds named John.
Alan and John sound perfectly fine as siblings to me.
Pet forms of John include: Johnny, Jack, and Jenkin.
Mns I like with John:
John Christopher
John Aubrey
John Lawrence / Laurence
John Graham
John Francis
John Cormac
John Daniel
John Magnus
John Clement
John Gareth
John Sebastian
John Oliver
John Cornelius
Anything but "John Thomas." In "Lady Chatterley's Lover," John Thomas was a euphamism for a penis. It's been used that way ever since.
P.S. LMS has a point.

Geez...stop yelling, and while we're at it, don't abuse the punctuation!
Too common. Too plain. Boring. And very popular. John reminds me of a fatherly figure. Yes. There's Sean / Shawn, Ian, Evan, Shane - they all come from John. William would be a good middle name just because of the composer John Williams. Jack is best. William would be ok. It could. I wouldn't use it.
