How do you pronounce the name Kathe? (there is a dipthong {?} over the 'a')
My friends daughter's name is Kaethe... is this just a variant to help the pronunciation? I was under the impression that the dipthong indicated the "uh" pronunciation rather than the "ay" sound.
I really like KAY-Th, but not KUH-th.
So what do you think?

I've always said KAY-ta / tuh. Depending on how loudly I'm yelling (haha). *I used to babysit a little
girl named this.
An old friend of mine is named Katherine, and always called herself Kat. She wanted to call
herself something different, and I suggested Käthe, and she pr. it Kath. For the life of me, I couldn't
get her to pr. it properly!

The ä is pronounced like the vowel in "cat", but longer.

And as for the diphthong: If you can't spell ä, ü, ö, you can spell it ae, ue, oe. It's the same sound.

It's not a dipthong, it's an umlaut.

I'm not exactly sure how the ä is pronounced, but don't forget that in German the 'e' at the end will be pronounced and the 'th' will be pronounced 't'. My best bet is that Käthe is pronounced KAY-ta. I could be completely wrong but that's what I can guess from my knowledge of German linguistics.
