I just came across this name in my dad's e-mail...I'm suspecting it's a woman his age (late 50s), before Gay became slang for homosexual. Back then, leen was the lyn of the day.

I used to attend church with a family who named their dd Gaythelene (pr. gay-tha-LEEN) Irene. The parents made up the name based on the dh's name, Guy. Irene was the gm's name. Still, I always thought Gaythelene was pretty bad and the combo RHYMED making it even worse.
ETA that everyone called her Gay. She was a lot younger so I never asked her if she liked her name.

I don't like it, I'm more of a lyn person myself. This reminds me, today I was watching T.V., and they where interviewing a 32 year old or so women named Gayla. Of the two, I proboly perfer Gayleen.

I know a few Gays/Gayes (a Gaye that I work with is actually named Gabrielle; she's in her late 40s...never asked her if she's had a problem with it). It would be a huge deal if someone named a baby Gay, Gayleen or Gaylord now, I'm sure. Gayleen is not my style either way, though. The only -leen name I really care for is Kathleen. Not a big -leen fan, lol.
On the subject of Gay as a name:
My sister told me of a friend of a friend of a friend (one of those stories) whose parents wanted to name her Candy (my sister's name is Candis nn Candi) but didn't because their ln was Barr. So they named her Gay. :-/

My mom's name is Galynn (age 60). It was originally pronounced guh-LIN , but mom changed it to be like Galen. Gay and Lynn were both trendy names in the 40's and 50's, and just like today there were a lot of made up names jumping on the trendy bandwagon.
I've also seen Galyn, Gaylyn, and Gaylene from that generation.

If only it were Gaileen, I might think it was a nifty retro combo name like Jerilyn... based on Gail, not Gay. Gayleen makes me say it gay-leen, Gaileen is more gail-een... I wonder if that makes any sense to anyone =P

Both the -ay sound and -een stretch my mough a bit to wide. It makes a terrible sound, like when Americans speek a foreign language and the accent makes it sounds horrible and American anyway.
