I'm friends with both a male and female Alex (though the male Alex is short for Alexandrew, not Alexander). Most nicknames to me are unisex. A girl could be called Jack (nn for Jacqueline) or Frankie (nn for Francesca)and a boy could be called Shelly (nn for Sheldon), so why not Alex?
