William
Liam, definitely.
:)
:)
Which one would you choose and why? Liam.
What's your impression of both names? William is a decent "classy" name but marshmallowy. Will is the natural nickname for it, to me. Liam sounds fresher, less stodgy, but not all that different from Will. Maybe a tad less "mainstreamy," and more stylized or fashionable.
People you know: the toddling son of a high school friend. William is - a peer of mine (mid-30s) very witty, smart, mellow, okay-looking but unsuccessful guy, and also the 12-ish son of my ex-boss, a spunky kid called Will.
which one is smarter? William
better looking? Liam
which one will do better as a child - either.
teenage boy - Liam
adult man - either. Possibly Will.
who would you to be friends with? Hm. I think of Liam as less predictable, more intriguing; Will is more witty and reliable but less interesting.

LIAM
I like William better
William
I greatly prefer William to Liam. William is a wonderful, classic name, and Liam, well, in my opinion sounds stuck-up, incomplete, and above all just plain unpleasant to the ears.
William Oliver sounds great, whereas Liam Oliver makes me cringe (as Liam tends to do to any combo).
I could go on and on, but frankly, in a short sentence its basically this: Think of all positives and put it under William - think of all negatives and put it under Liam. I cant think of anything Positive about Liam nor can I think of anything negative about William.

Ditto
Pretty much same.
Liam is so silly and trendy, and William is so classic and handsome. You can call him Liam if you really want.

Which does it look like will age better and with more dignity? I know you don't like nicknames, but still, if it really comes down to it, you can call him Liam. It doesn't matter to anyone else that you don't like nicknames; it's only your own standard you're jumping if you call him Liam occasionally/affectionately. And if he instructs other people to call him Liam sometimes instead of Will (as will inevitably happen with William) I don't understand why this would be such a conflict.
W. is a much cooler first initial. William carries so much more dignity and has such a strong and rich history to it. It's so regal.
Liam sounds silly and floppy, like a fish out of water. The only appeal to it (and it doesn't even do this for me, just for people who like Liam) is that it's cute and snappy! (Bleah, it's not.) Cute and snappy does not age well. Men don't want to be cute.
William ALL the way.

You do know Liam is a nn for William, right? If that's the case, then there's no argument about what name to choose. It can be William, with the nn Liam. :)
I, sadly, don't know any Williams, but I've always liked the naeme. It's very masculine, traditional and not in any danger of being outdated - at least, not IMO.

I tcould be a name on it's own. I heard somewhere that it meant "my people" in Hebrew, I am not 100% sure on the validity of that statement.
I am surprised you have never met a William. In one of my classes freshman year we had five Williams out of twenty kids. it was so confusing because they all went by Will.

I do know but I like it on its own :-/
I would love to know statistics how menny Liams there is, as a name and as a nn?!

...but what about Willams that goes as Liam's?
I don't think there's any official register of people's nicknames.
Well, if he liked William and you like Liam, why not William "Liam"? He doesn't have to call him Liam, my mum and dad have different nns for me. Also, he has a well known name on his birth certificate. Perfect compromise IMO. If you dislike nns and you think he will always be called William then I don't think its very likely unless your son wants to named William. He could get all his friends to call him Bill, whether you like it or not. I say name him William and call him Liam :)
Liam to me is a very Irish old man name, and very chavvy little boy name. William doesn't hold stereotypes, it is so classic.
Which one will do better? He will be the same person whether he is called Bob or Patrick or Will or William. A name will not define a person.
