Help[Opinions] Grimsby (UK) BAs, and a horrible sibset

While in work yesterday I served a young woman with three children. Their names were:
Spencer (not too bad)
TJ / TeeJay (getting worse)
Destiny (eurgh!)
I have NEVER met, or even heard of, an English baby named Destiny before, and I hoped I never would. It just sounds so tacky to me.

Got to disagree with you on the "horrible sibset" assertion.
Honestly, I don't really have anything against the name Destiny, or the names of her siblings (though Spencer sounds a little dry to my ear). It doesn't sound tacky to me. Really, I'm sick of hearing people bash it while blithely endorsing or ignoring pretentious names like Freya-Anais.

What irks me is that people who find Destiny tacky don't seem to have a really precise reason. It's not that they don't like any word names (in fact they might be quite fond of River or Iris or even something as outré as Apple or as contrived as Lily-Rose); it's not even that they don't like abstract concepts as names (there's certainly nothing tacky about Grace, and Verity and Honor may pass muster as well); it's just that there's something "trashy" or "stripperish" about Destiny, and its cousins Genesis and Charisma. It reeks of classism to me--because it was popular among the lower classes without ever much passing through the upper classes (more often the trend is reversed), Destiny is endlessly and undeservedly trashed. I'm so sick of the snobbery that clobbers Destiny so often in naming discussions.

I enjoy articulating why I dislike names and this gives me the perfect opportunity to articulate why I dislike Destiny. :) There may be a degree of classism here of which I am unaware, of course.
One of the main reasons I hate Destiny is because I hate it phonetically. Most girl names that are three syllables with the first emphasized I dislike, because it sounds singsongy and silly, unless they don't end in -ee, or they have a strong syllable to tie them down. Most names that end in -ee I hate actually, they sound flighty and stupid. And for some reason, Destiny seems like a really selfish name, like "my darling daughter has a unique and special DESTINY that puts her above everyone else." Which is a fine thought to have. It's just that I can't help rolling my eyes about it.
Kind of OT, the other names: I hate Freya and I don't know how to say Anais. River's okay and I'm kind of tired of it, Iris rocks, I am surprised by how much I like Apple, Lily-Rose makes me want to gag, Grace is something I am getting quite tired of, I like Verity as far as virtue names go, Honor's a little much but it's nice sounding, and I hate Genesis and Charisma because I hate how Genesis sounds and it's a lousy thing to name your kid for, and Charisma is way too metallic and a very shallow virtue imo. Actually, Freya and Anais are names steeped in much more history than the name Destiny. Destiny has been a name for a very short time and I actually consider it a dated 90's name as it was trendy there for awhile.
I do not bash the name Destiny, or Trinity or Liberty for that matter, but I do find them tacky and yes...'stripperish'. This is not based on some idea in my own head, it is based on a bit of fact. If a lot of people have met strippers named Destiny than there is going to be an association with the name Destiny and stripping and people will likely label it 'stripperish.' The same would go for Freya and Anais. If there were a lot of strippers with the stage name Freya then Freya would likely be associated with strippers and be labeled 'stripperish.' There is logic behind most people's associations with names and I think that if people find stripping immoral or disgusting then they are likely to find a 'stripperish' name tacky. This really has nothing to do with class, money, or status (unless you have the idea that all strippers are lower class people).

I must say I have to agree. I would rather see a little Destiny than a made up name or something ending in -ayden. I think Destiny is alright, just not one of my favorites. Although I love word names and absolutely adore Genesis and Charisma, it is in the end the child who makes the name, not the image. A very reserved woman could be named Bambi or Kitty or Desirae or Nevaeh. And a stripper could pick the name Iris. To me, the name Destiny seems, well, as normal as Brittany or Amanda. Nothing "lower class" about it. But I suppose I am from a Midwestern working class community, so maybe that's why. But I agree, some names get a bad reputation for no reason.

If I may...the reason I personally dislike Destiny is because I'm not a fan of the concept itself and thus wouldn't endorse it as a name. Is that fair enough? :D
I don't think Spencer and TJ are terrible at all, though, and I do agree about what you're saying about the classism involved. Just sayin'. ;)

I agree with you on the concept. It's sorta like saying "oh don't bother, everything is going to fall into place, so there really is no point in trying to acheive something different". I know that might not be the idea in some peoples mind, but it what the name gives of to me, so I dislike it.

Charlie Mae (Olivia) - not Charlie on a girl! I can tolerate it as a nn but not on it's own. And May/Mae is turning out to be the Louise of this generation, when I was younger every girl seemed to have Louise as a mn and now it's May/Mae.

Freya-Anais - I love Freya but what is it with the obsession with hyphenating? The ones I've been posting so far have had, amongst others, Oliver-Jack, Lacey-Mia and today's Tegan-Kereda. Why I wonder?

Personally, I like to blame the trend on Mary-Kate Olsen. Realistically, I think it has a lot to do with parents liking too many names and they cannot decide on which one to choose so they just string them together with hyphens hoping people will think it is actually one name. I don't buy it. :o)
