WDYTO? Colyer
My grandmother works in the first nursery, and there's a little boy named Colyer starting Monday.
How do you pronounce it? And where does it come from?
I realize a couple of the questions probably belong on the name facts board, but I figured I'd combine and save the board space. :)

Is that the spelling? There is a surname Collier (derived from a coal worker). I wonder if it is connected to Colyer.

I've never seen it spelled that way, but I've seen the surname Collier (CAHL-yer or CAH-lee-er) and also a woman I work with has a daughter named Collier. Yes, a girl. :b Not sure on the spelling, though. But she's 20 years old, and they pronounce it CAHL-yer.
I don't really care for it. Maybe as a mn and for a boy, but only if it's a family name, etc.

BTW, I just read some of the previous posts. And I live in the South and the girl named Collier is also Southern. :b

Colyer was the last name of the deputy head at my secondary school. Nice man.
I pronounce it COL-yer. According to my book, Colyer is a varient of Collier, an occuaptional surname belonging to those who were a charcoal burner or a gatherer/seller of coal.
I don't like it, it's too much of a surname to me.

The Oxford Names Companion. I was looking in the surname section rather than the first names because I've only known it as a surname.

I don't like it at all. I think it is visually unattractive and to boot it reminds me of the word collier (coal miner).

It is pronounced "Call-yer" and I consider it a very Southern name, I'm not sure of the etymology.
