The years 1447-1449 were troubling ones for Revelia. Crown Prince Cosimo Friedrich, then twenty-one, had chosen as wife sixteen-year-old Vincenza Sforza, youngest daughter of Patrizio Sforza, who was duke of wealthy Revelian province Movina in the north. Vincenza was undoubtedly the most beautiful and accomplished of Duke Patrizio's seven daughters, and the royal court looked upon the engagement approvingly. The nation itself, however, saw the marriage as a means of strengthening the already powerful Revelian nobility. Cosimo Friedrich and Vincenza's wedding was postponed repeatedly because of riots throughout the country, especially in Movina. The ceremony was finally scheduled to take place in March of 1449. On the eve of the wedding, King Cosimo Emanuele threw a lavish and extravagant feast in celebration of his son's upcoming union; even his brother, Prince Edoardo Federico (also known as Edoardo the Lonesome) made an appearance and became blazingly drunk.
The next morning, the festive mood of the night before had become dark and somber. The Crown Prince and his uncle were found dead in their beds; court physicians determined the cause to be poison. The subversive terrorist group known as La Repubblica di Liberazione (the Liberation Republic) was held responsible for the murders and its members subsequently executed by public hanging. The king was distraught over the death of his son and could not be consoled. He finally succumbed to his heartbreak later that year and passed away at the age of 72.
Vittorio was now ruler of all Revelia, something no one had ever thought would happen. He took the title Vittorio XI and married Svetlana of Kvoran, the youngest daughter of Grand Emperor Konstantin. He appeared to be the most unaffected by the deaths of his father and brother; in fact, his pale and sickly disposition disappeared and he became healthy and robust. (He was thereafter called Vittorio the Gallant.) The first five years of his marriage to Svetlana produced only two children: a son, Cosimo Eduard (named for his grandfather and granduncle), and a daughter, Elisabetta.
Upon becoming king, Vittorio immediately sought to expand the influence of Revelian culture. His greatest success was undoubtedly his marriage to Svetlana and subsequent alliance with the Kvoran Empire. What is most often overlooked is his role in arranging the marriage between his younger sister, Princess Francesca, and Erik VIII, king of Haakden. With this union, Francesca became queen of Haakden, thereby affording Vittorio with greater power outside the borders of Revelia.
