Alfonso had originally been bethrothed to his distant cousin to another state however weeks before the wedding she died of smallpox. This left Alfonso is an anxious state as he was getting worried about whether he would have a son in time. So, deciding that a heir was more important than an alliance he quickly and quietly married his mistress Anastasia thinking that a link to Gardelona by a baroness was better than nothing.
And intermarriage is fine by me.
