WDYTO Newt... On a girl? I saw it in a volume of short stories (she was the author of a story).

Sorry, but it reminds me way to much of the little amphibians, or whatever animal kingdom they are. And I don't find it feminine at all anyway.

The second I saw Newt, I thought of the little girl, in the movie "Aliens", the one from 1986. She was called that by her brother, because she was really smart, but her name was Rebecca Jorden.
But without that above reason in mind, I'll say that it's great for a girl. More so than for a male, even if it technically that, a male name. Can't really name the reason as to why, it just is.
Btw... The girls last name, Jorden, is the Danish name for "the Earth".

"Aliens" was the first thing I thought of as well
Unfortunately, like Isla, the next was Newt ("n-Ewwwwww-t") Gingrinch.
However, I liked Newt the little girl in Aliens. Seems nearly as good a cultural reference as Scout, to me.

Yes, newts are rather cute, but it's not very name-ish to me. But I'm all for Newton on a boy! I suppose it would even be ok on a girl, if you really like it.

Newts, salamanders, frogs and Gingrich. Or spell it Knute and you have the punch line to half of Garrison Keillor's Minnesota-Scandinavian jokes. The other half of them have Ole in the punch line.
