This is what we call my little sister Ruby as a nickname, though we spell it Ruba (as in "A Ruba, Jamaica, oooh, I wanna take ya..." ;).
It's okay, I suppose, and if I met someone by the name, I wouldn't blink...but since we use it as a silly pet name, it seems about as standalone as Rubot and Boo, or any of the other things my sister's called.
