War with Gwynedd was eminent after the death of it's Prince Emrys. But war would be held off on the condition that Grand Duchess Danica marry someone of prominence and so she was wed in her twenty-forth year to Lord Maxen Vaughn John Gruffydd, duke of Silberton Gwynedd's naval hero.

War is kept off from without through the maneuvering of Emperor Nikolai VII. Within the country the emperor's youngest brother Dmitri continues to cause problems. Being in the military has just put the duke in contact with women of higher social status. Dmitri has such a charming way that he cannot be trusted with wives or daughters! His second mistress was Anca Bianca Viorel, Duchess of Viorella, young wife of the Duke of Viorella. This tryst yielded a daughter Bianca. The matter was patched up and not even Anca's husband knows that Bianca is really Dmitri's daughter at first.
Dmitri's third mistress was a much wilder affair, soon after Bianca's birth Dmitri stayed with the Duke of Andruk. His wife Angelica some six years older than Dmitri had seemed to be barren until she ran off with Dmitri and the couple eluded searches until it was discovered she was pregnant. Angelica has stayed with Dmitri for four years now and has proved it was her husband who didn't have what it takes by giving birth to not only a son but also a daughter. The emperor has refused to give titles or inheritance to these illegitimate children but will give an annual amount to their mother while she lives.
