Which of the children died in infancy? None is cool, I like having three.
Anyway. Yes. The rising burgher class adores Philipp and Felicia, but the aristocracy is growing more and more resentful as Philipp continues to lessen their power. Poor Heinrich is baffled, but successful in appealing the lesser Westphalian nobles. His influence is not far-reaching, though, and some of the nobles are even creating their own churches according to the teachings of a daft monk who preaches that each man is his own soverign and advocates vernacular circulation of the holy texts! Also the sacrifice of box turtles and painting of faces, and strange dancing rites on the solstices. In retaliation, Philipp and Father Cristiano passed a Holy Decree that allowed for the periodic examination of the nobles' faith and loyalty to both the church and the state, and if their devotion was found to be insufficient the nobles in question would be stripped of their land (God I am having fun writing this!) and titles, and their land given to the clergy. The first of these "cleansings" wiped out a good fifteen percent of the nobles, and left the rest quite meek. But of course, they were simmering inside: most regarded the Holy Decree as an outright declaration of war against the nobility, and they often met secretly to worship and pledge hatred of Philipp and Felicia.
Poor Katarina! She finally fell in love with the dashing Lord Alfredo of Wardia (near Marvalia and Doloria, but much less powerful than either), when he was found dead in his bed. Stricken with grief, and under Christina's teasing her old-maid potential, she accepted the marriage proposal of Lord Alfred of Wingland, the duke of Furlington, whom she didn't love at all and whose family happened to be a longtime rival of Wardia's royal family. The defensive, reactionary, and land-hungry Wardians immediately began to cut off trade ties with Cussia and mobilize for warfare. King Philipp released a statement condeming the Wardians for their heresy and encouraging other pious nations to sever their trade ties with them as well; his strong influence in Marvalia and Doloria is currently strangling the Wardian economy, and it looks as though war will be avoidable.
Meanwhile, Franz Ignaz is back in the country and absolutely incorrigible! He has impregnated two more women, both of whom were daughters of ex-nobles who were disinherited during the first cleansing. Philipp ordered the execution of both women, but their sudden escape from the public eye has made them much less recognizable. Ernst Krause and Otto Diederich, the grandfathers, have publicly expressed delighted amusement at the prospect of being grandparents to the nephews and nieces of the king. Philipp has also ordered the delivery of the children into royal hands, as young Alexander Johannes was, but again, anonymity is great for invisibility! Though his inability to find his brother or any of his mistresses vexes him, Felicia has encouraged him not to send spies or secret police in pursuit of them; such an action, she says, would make the people distrustful and unhappy. Instead, significant rewards -- money, land, and titles -- have been placed on the heads of the four fugitives, and for the delivery of Franz Ignaz's children to Frienne.
