Message: "Aranea?" - Behind the Name

Okay, so I was watching Charlotte's Web the other night and one of the little baby spiders at the end names herself Aranea. I thought it was kinda pretty. WDYTO it? It is prn Uh-rain-ee-uh. At first I thought it would have a more creative spelling like Araynia, but then I paid attention during the credits and it was spelled Aranea. So, wdyt and wdyto the spelling?

It's okay, I kind of like it. I don't see the problem with naming a child a name that means spider, people name their kids Tiger, Cat, and Kitty, so why not.

If I met an Aranea, I'd assume it was pronounced air-uh-NAY-uh (sort of like how Galatea is galla-TAY-uh), not uh-rain-ee-uh. To be frank, I rather prefer my prn--the "correct" one sounds like it should be the name of a country, or a mispronounced Urania.

I prefer Arachne, in any case. ;)

It's not just a name that E.B. White made up. It really does have something to do with spiders. I had a picture book about a spider when I was little and it was called "Aranea."

So I wouldn't think it was a good name for a person.

I like it. People give their pets human names - why not let it be the other way around?

It's not the name of one or two specific spiders, it's a scientific term. It would be like naming a dog Homosapiens, or a person Ursus or Ornithorhynchus.

I like Neanderthal for a big dog (St. Bernard or Doberman, lol. Thanx for the idea!
