Despite the objections of their families, David and Opal's marriage has been happy and loving, even though they are fairly poor. David works for an aging neighbor who can no longer take care of his own small farm, and they have built a small but cozy cottage next to the main house. Opal takes in washing and mending work when she can; she has been very busy having and caring for their three daughters; Ruby Iris was born December 26th, 1900, just six months after they were married, Hazel Grace arrived January 2nd, 1902, and Ivy Pearl followed on January 2nd, 1904.
If she wasn't already busy enough, Opal just realized that she is experiencing certain symptoms again, and thinks she may have another baby before the year is done.
