I've never seen this name before. I have heard of Fionuala (fee-oh-NOO-lah) though. I also like Finola (fih-NOH-lah). I like the sound of your spelling though.

It was high on my list for #1, but the spouse wouldn't go for it. I think its great, strong, interesting, feminine, and has great nns Finn, Nola, Nula . . . love it.

It is a little much, I would much prefer Finola.

I like it, but I'm put off by the fact that my boyfriend had a friend with this name at school, and when she left year 11 (at sixteen, after five years of being in the school), the majority of teachers still struggled to say it. And this was a small school, just under six hundred pupils, so everyone basically knew everyone. I would worry that a daughter with this name would be spelling it out her whole life.

How about just Nuala? Or Fiona? Or Fenella / Fionola, as others have suggested?

There used to be a shop near me called Nuala Ashe and I completely fell in love with Fionnuala (this spelling) when I found out that was what it was short for. I love the nn Nuala too.

I'm not usually a fan of anglicised spellings and pronunciations of Gaelic names but in this case I really like both Fenella and Finola. Maybe your husband would be more receptive of these?? It's worth a try lol.

I love Fionnuala, this spelling only. I've never seen your spelling before. You've got the pronunciation correct, though. I'm an Irish-American and would name a dd Niamh or Aoife tomorrow, so I'm biased. But Fionnuala is just gorgeous to my ears.

If your dh doesn't go for it, how about Finola ("fi-NO-la")? I like just as much as Fionnuala, but it is more user friendly. And the nn Nola is so pretty.
