Help[Opinions] Jean for a boy?
For the past week or so I've really been thinking about it. The masculine form of Jean is French and is pronounced "zhawn" with the N being almost silent. I love that pronunciation, but I also think that the feminine pronunciation ("jeen") would sound nice on a boy. Is that too trendy-gender-bender? These are some combos I've thought of using the female pronunciation:

Jean Evander
Jean Finnegan
Jean Patrick
Peter Jean
Viktor Jean
ETA: A lot of people have been suggesting Gene, which has the same sound, but I think it looks rather ugly, IMO.

Jean is definitely male to me (as well as female). It all depends on how you pronounce it. The English Jean is only female and the French Jean is only male imo.
Personally I prefer Jean for a boy (with the French pronounciation) and I think it's nice with another name (Jean-Paul, Jean-Luc) but it can stand on its own too.

I have to go with most of the crowd and say I prefer Gene for a boy.

I agree, I prefer the look of Jean. However, if you want the JEEN pronounciation on a boy, I'd spell it Gene. It's too gender-bendy otherwise Or even name him Eugene with Gene for a nickname. I like the French pronounciation better, myself, in any case.
I do think that most of your combos work much better pronounced JEEN not ZHAWN. My vote would be Viktor Jean, Jean Elijah (but this makes me soften the J in Elijah, which still sounds just fine to my ears), or Peter Gene (I really like the flow of this but still don't support Jean-prn.-JEEN on a boy.)

I think Jean is fine for either gender pronounced JEEN.

Jean isn't much better, unless you would actually use the French pron, then it would be no probs for me. If I was forced to choose between Gene or Jean, I'd say Jean. As a MN it would be lot better, not to mention the teasing potential Jean as a FN has for a boy. I'd pair it with a very masculine name, not like Elijah. Patrick and Victor (I don't like ViKtor) would be masculine enough imo.

I think it would be usable on a boy depending where you are. In the U.S. Jean is a girls name and could be very confusing on boy. I agree the spelling Gene is rather ugly and looks like a nn imo. If you were to use the Jean spelling in the U.S., I would suggest you hyphenate it with another more masculine name. Jean-Patrick maybe. Just to avoid any teasing or confusion. I do much prefer the french pronounciation.

Yeah, Gene looks ugly to me, too. That's why I prefer Jean lol.

Jean looks out of place on a boy, it's an all girl name to me. How about, using Gene instead?

In a way Gene as in "Genes" can be kind of charming o a boy when it comes to all that male, family lineage, carrying on the family name sort of stuff. Not my cup of tea, but still nice.
