Gabe had been struggling with depression since he left for college. Paula and Jackie had encouraged him to get some counseling, to consider taking a gap year, but Gabe didn’t want his condition to affect his academic progress. A semester into his freshman year, Gabe changed his mind, much to his parents’ relief, and was put on SSRI medication to treat his depression. But with his busy schedule and class load, Gabe found it difficult to make time to see his therapist, although it was recommended that Gabe see him 3 times a month, especially at the start of his treatment. 3 months after he was put on medication, Gabe’s girlfriend walked into his dorm room to find Gabe passed out on the sofa, and an empty bottle of aspirin on the bedside table. Violet panicked and called 911, then the school’s medical center, where Gabe was rushed to have his stomach pumped. Luckily, Violet had found Gabe just in time, and after his procedure was over, Gabe was physically alright, although he was obviously emotionally damaged. It was then that Gabe’s therapist was contacted. It was then that the family was informed of SSRI medication’s possible side affects- that patients are often at a much higher risk for suicide while on the medication. The family was FURIOUS. A law suit followed, as neither Gabe nor his family had been informed of this possibility. Gabe was immediately taken of the medication and sent to a much more qualified therapist who made saw Gabe a minimum of once a week while they were finding medication that was right for him. Once Gabe got over the initial shock and found a capable psychiatrist, he spent a few weeks in group therapy before he returned to school. His teachers were informed of the misunderstanding, and Gabe was given extensions where they were needed. Violet and Gabe have been closer than ever since Gabe’s recovery.
Without a college education and a daughter at home, Maya was working at a major law firm close to home. She plans to complete this year with the firm, then apply to her state school and eventually go to law school. Having Julie around had not been easy for Maya, as much as she loved her (especially since she and Brendan split up). Maya announced to her parents and family after the breakup that she was bisexual, and has been seeing a lovely girl named Heather for two years now. They are thinking of starting a family. Julie already thinks of Heather as a second mother.
Eliot recently married his longtime girlfriend Jenny, and 2 months ago Jenny gave birth to a healthy baby girl whom they named Nora.
