I agree with the suggestion of Edward above - Ned is a total boy-next-door, vaguely mediaeval nickname, and Edward a very 'royal' sounding name.Other names that spring to mind from some of the old kings are Henry (Harry), John (Jack), and Richard (Dicken - if that's not too phallic for you!). George, also, could be a commoner or an emperor.
