[Opinions] Theodora.
This is name that I used to like a few years ago when it was "In" on the boards and I'm currently thinking about it once again. I would nn her Teddy or Thora (mainly because Teddy is a very '20s nickname to me). Wdyt? I find it a bit too pretentious.I was also looking back at previous favorites and came across the following names. WDYT?
Amarante
Nyx
Katarina
MariahPhilip
Alistair
AlecI'm amazed, none of them are really "me" anymore. I can see myself using Katarina and Amarante, but that's about it.

I quite like Theodora, Teddy or Thea would be my choice as nns. Thora isn't my style, since I really like Thor for a boy.I don't think it sounds pretentious, especially not Teddy.Nyx - Nicks? Not my style, sounds like a nice name for a cat, though.
Katarina - I like Katherine, Katia, and Kaia but I cannot warm up to Katarina, Katrina, etc. I think its the "reen" sound.
Mariah - the name itself is fine, but I associate it to closely with Mariah Carey.Philip - Philip has unfortunately come to represent middle aged talk show hosts like McGraw & Donahue. If it was just Donahue I could tolerate it.
Alistair - okay. Alisdhair or something flufflier more so.
Alec - I prefer Alexander nn Alex, Xander, or Andy.

I like Theodora, but not Teddy. I don't usually like unisex nns, though. My favorite nn is Thea. I don't know if Theodora is pretentious or not, but never care about that.I really like Mariah (spelled Maria), Philip, Alistair, and Alec (as a nn for Alexander). I've always thought Alec sounded much nicer than Alex.

I worry about my kids having pretentious namesBecause my boyfriend and I are the opposite of such. I plan on raising my family in the Midwest and on a farm. As my dad said "Can you imagine yelling 'Raphael! Go outside to feed the chickens" or "Theodora, go clean up the manure" I can't.

I can...though it was generally "Theodora, how many times do I have tell you, DO NOT stand behind the horse!" =)

I guess my family is different. I can easily picture saying "Theodora please do not draw all over the score to my new string quartet until I am done writing it please." :)

LOLThat does work, quite well. :-D

I love Theodora, Dorothea, and Dorothy sooo much. I can never decide which is my favorite. Theodora isn't pretentious at all, imo. I find it dignified and serious without being stodgy and uninteresting. Teddy is a great nn.Amarante: Nms. There's something cloying about it, and I think it tries too hard.
Nyx: One of my least favorite legitimate names, to be honest. It's similarity to 'nix' makes me think of nothingness and head lice treatment. Plus, I'm unimpressed by the mythological connection. If I were to name my daughter after a goddess, it wouldn't be this one.
Katarina: Very nice.
Mariah: I used to love this, but I think Ms. Carey has given the name a cheaper feel.
Philip: Fabulous. I love this name more than I can say.
Alistair: It's okay. One of those names I like as a mn or on "someone else's" child.
Alec: Love it. I think this is an under-appreciated gem.

I love Theodora. It happens to be a combination of my great-great-grandparents' names, and it would be so adorable to use Theodore for a boy and Theodora for a girl. But otherwise, I think it looks and sounds very classy. Amarante: nmsaa, but it looks kind of like a gemstone.
Nyx: Looks like nix to me.
Katarina: It's ok. I have a friend named Katarina nn "Kat"
Mariah: I have a friend named Mariah, but I always think of a) Mariah Carey and b) Paint Your Wagon ("They Call the Wind Mariah")
Philip: Ok, I have a lot of friends named Philip.
Alistair: I see this a lot, but I'm not a fan.
Alec: I prefer Alexander nn Alec.

Though pretty, Theodora is a little clunky but I still think it's fresh and doable. After all, Isabella and Isadora work. Theodora certainly can. I just hope it doesn't become the next Isabella or Alexandra which have a similar feel. Teddy is cute but nms. BTW, I used to have a friend in h.s. named Theodore Blair (fn and mn) and we called him Teddy Bear. He hated it, poor thing. ;-) Thora reminds me of thorax. I suppose I like Thea best which leads me to Dorothea which is just lovely, imo. For me, it seems to have a nicer flow. I don't find Theodora especially pretentious but its other forms, Teodora and Dorotea, might be if one didn't have those ethnic backgrounds. Otherwise, I'd be tempted to use them (that and dh thinks I'm weird for even suggesting them). I think they're truly beautiful.Amarante -- Quite unusual; it would be a shame to reduce this to Amy.
Nyx -- dislike the sound and meaning
Katarina -- adore this; prefer Katerina
Mariah -- At one time, I loved it. Now I think Ms. Carey.Philip -- doesn't inspire me at all
Alistair -- prefer Alexander
Alec -- prefer this as a nick for Alexander

I like Theodora, but only the nickname Teddy. Thora just bugs me for some reason, there's just something about it I can't put my finger on that bugs.Amarante - Not my style at all.
Nyx - Even more not my style.
Katarina - I know too many of them who weren't very nice. Bad associations.
Mariah - I like it, but I'd never use it because of Mariah Carey.Philip - Love it.
Alistair - I like it, but it's a mouthful.
Alec - Like it, but only as a diminutive.

My cousin has a daughter named Theodora Autumn. Anna (my cousin) calls her Theodora, her dad calls her Dora, and we tend to call her Thea. I love the name becuase of her, she's always been the cutest, most vibrant kid.

The Unisex DiminutivesI know I am going against the grain, but I think the nicknames Thea, Thora, Theora, Theda and Dora are HIDEOUS (especially given the other possibilities). I would rather call her by the full Theodora than these awkward derangements. I do, however, adore both Teddy and Theo for a girl. I am not as opposed as most of you [with such great virulence] to girls having traditionally male nicknames as long as there is a feminine formal name to fall back on. I rather like it, and so does my entire family who are name elitists. Teddy especially is suitably soft and fabulously catchy for a woman in my view. Theo is more daring, but still very stylish and extraordinarily sharp for a woman. I would allow either or both.

Theddy and Theo are very '20s to meI grew up in a church where the majority of the members were elderly. We had a fabulous Theodora nn Theo and another one nn Teddy. I tend to get very distinct images when it comes to names and I can see a Teddy as my daughter, but definitely not a Dora. Thea, yes; Theda, yes...but not as much as Teddy.

Regarding TheodoraTheodora is superiorly elegant and lovely, and I wouldn't worry that it sounds pretentious or old fashioned. I like Theda or Thea as a short form, but Teddy is cute too. Thora is not so inspiring for me.

That sounds like the title of the next great novel! Regarding Theodora :)was there a "Regarding Someone Else" already? Tess? No, that was Guarding Tess.

Theodora - very sophisticated. I like the sound and look of it. I don't like Teddy or Thora, I prefer Thea which is more feminine and modern imo.
Amarante - dislike the sound
Nyx - too harsh sounding for me
Katarina - pretty and timeless imo
Mariah - really dislike the sound and look of itPhilip - boring
Alistair - like it a lot. Hasn't made it into my PNL but I've been thinking about it.
Alec - LOVE it! I love the look and sound of it. It isn't my favorite name for a boy anymore but it's definitely in the top 3.

I like the nn Thora, but Theodora sounds very old to me. I cannot picture this on anyone below 65 years of age. Amarante is okay
Nyx is nice, but to me it seems like it means 'nothing', because of the Dutch word for 'nothing' which is 'niks' (I pron it the same as Nyx), that makes it very unusable for me
Katarina, I prefer this spelled Catharina, Katarina doens't appeal to me
I don't like MariahPhilip is ok, but not great
Alistair is very ncie
Alec is nms, Alex would be better

There is not a more beautiful nameTheodora is my number 1 choice for a girl. I would call her Teddy, and the combo is Theodora Catherine. None of my other female combos can hold a candle to how much I admire this one. I think I first started liking the combo because I am a huge J. S. Bach fan, and he called his first daughter Catharina Dorothea, so I reversed it and came up with Theodora Catherine. It has been my favorite since I was about 15 so I pretty much know now I am not going to stop liking it. I don't think there is a more beautiful name. I like it so much that I doubt I'd even date someone opposed to using this name. It's been decided.
